New Promo piece sketch!!!

Hi everybody,
It seems like ages since I've posted something new!! Anyway here it is. I was hoping to come up with a new promo piece to send out as a large postcard and came up with this sketch. Let me know if it works and what you see that doesn't. I started to throw in the dark blue star filled night in photoshop so you could get an idea of what the negative space will look like more clearly but I erased it and figured I'll wait until I get your feedback on the drawing before I spend time on anything further. I'm going to paint this in gouache and also use colored pencil for details. The lettering on the cover of the book will be digital for sure and everything else will be in paint. Right now, as is, the lettering is just rough sketched in.

  1. Giselle, this is a very cute promo idea! It's nice to see your work up here again! :)

I really like the girl, her expression and positioning is great. To be picky, and I know you're not totally done but, she needs a little bit of a thumb line on her hand that's holding the string. Her face is very cute and she definitely looks like she's flying!

Will there be any kind of imagery or words at the bottom? It looks sort of blank to me.

I must admit, there's something about the way the book is drawn that I'm not seeing correctly. I'm not sure if it's just me but I'm seeing the pages but they look like they're on the back of the book? I don't know, this area is just not clear to me. Also, the angle of the book seems off. For some reason I'm just not able to close this book in my mind and have it make sense. Again, maybe I'm looking at it wrong but at a glance I'm having trouble.

If you didn't have plans for the area below, maybe you could add some more flying books of various sizes? This would help to add even more depth to this piece as well as some additional interesting areas to look at. Just a thought!

    Nice work, Giselle!

  2. Hi Gina,
Good critique, thanks! I see what you mean about the book not being clear. I think I'm going to zoom out a bit and draw more of it, with corrections of course, so that you can see the whole book. In actuality she is holding onto the cover of the book and it is opened up facing the top. Thus the pages on top. The angle is off on the book now that I'm looking at it with fresh eyes, you're right! And also, yes, absolutely a good idea to throw some more little flying books around like you suggested. I was keeping the bottom kind of empty to maintain a big sense of "space". So she really looks like she flying by with nothing under her. Working on update as I blog!!!.Thanks again. Good luck with your response to sending out "Chicken". Hope the AD likes it.

  3. Hi Giselle,
I like the idea for the promo. The baby's expression looks scared to me. I don't know if that's the look you are going for? I think showing more of the book might be a good idea. We all know what it is, but someone just glancing at it might be confused. The little girl looks like she is ready for a ride! Neat idea. I look forward to seeing this one come along!

  4. This is a wonderful sketch. I love the little girl, she seems so light and playful here. I could not tell if the baby was happy or not. What a great idea to work on. Can't wait to see it in color.

  5. This is great. It makes me really happy looking at this illustration. The little girl seems really happy and I love her face. I really like it. What medium are you going to use?

  6. You're back! This is going to be a great piece. I love the dramatic angles of the book because it creates a downward motion but I do have to agree that the angle of the book is a bit off. The inside line of the left side of the book looks too long. I think it actually should be shorter then the right inside line of the book because it is farther off in the distance.

I know you are probably still working on the type but you could set the type in any computer program and then paint over it. (I can help you with that part!) That way it still looks handdrawn but is set correctly.

The expression on all the faces is perfect. This will obviously make a great promo piece.

can you put a cow jumping over the moon in there? jk

  7. Hi Giselle,
What a cool piece. I love the way you play with arial perspectives. They can be tricky at times.
The girl, baby, moon and cat are great! Love their expressions and body movement. Very fun.
There is something funky happening with the book though, perspective wise. Have you had someone model the book for you yet? Perhaps try to hang or have someone hold the book at the angle/veiw you're trying get and take some pictures or do a quick sketch of the book from that very perspective.
The page lines look like their going horizontal therefore making it look like the back of the book.
It's hard to explain, but, I'm sure if you sleep on it, you're figure out a solution.
Other then that minor detail, everything looks great and I wouldn't change any of it. Can't wait to see this painted! Sweet.
    Chris M.
